Herseth on Healthcare: Lefty Liberal or Blue Dog Democrat? You actually DON'T get to decide.

A recent Argus Leader letter to the editor poses and answers their own question of:

Should anti-abortion taxpayers be forced to pay for abortions? Our representative to Congress says yes.

While they are correct on Herseth-Sandlin's voting record on the Stupak Amendment, their conclusion (especially in the context of the healthcare debate) is dishonest. 

I really do have to give credit to the creativity of the right-wing though. With their bread-and-butter strategy of attacking candidates for their support of healthcare reform (which is FAR from Obamacare) taken away, their willingness to go to new lengths to attack her on the healthcare front is somewhere between inspirational and laughable. First they complained that she wouldn't vow to repeal the bill, and now they're saying that she voted to support state-funded abortions. 

Well news-flash, she didn't vote for healthcare reform, she didn't vote to fund abortions. She didn't even vote for tort reform. She didn't vote for any bit of it. When the dust settled on the the votes on the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010, the votes were recorded. 220 yea and 211 nay, and Herseth-Sandlin found herself aligned with the latter of the two. 

So let's stop playing pretend. She unfortunately (for millions of American and GOP talking points) didn't vote for the bill, and isn't feebly making promises to voters of repeal to win votes. 

]I realize both sides are far from keeping the campaigns positive, but let's at least try to keep it accurate. 

Even More Coverage of the Potential Islamic Center in NYC

A recent Argus Leader op-ed critiqued the current situation revolving around the proposal for the construction of a New York City Islamic Center, and the nation's reaction. 


I won't bore you with it all, so here is the first notable quote: 

This nation was founded on Christianity, or God wouldn't have been in all those things in the first place. So far, Christian churches in America still outnumber those of other religions. But for how long?

Though in some instances simplicity may be bliss, in this case it most certainly is not. The writer is just flat out wrong to say that our nation was founded on Christianity. Our nation was founded on the basisof religious freedom, not Christianity. Believe you me, the pilgrims got an all-you-can-pray buffet of Christianity, back in England... And that's why they left. And regardless of whether "god" refers to a Judeo–Christian god or the mere existence of a higher being, the first amendment to the Constitution still guarantees the freedom of speech and religion to all. The simplistic argument of the word "god" being placed on coins and in the Pledge of Allegiance doesn't serve as a basis as to why we should be intolerant of other religions.


The writer, Helen A. De Kam also pays attribute to Pastor Terry Jones' plan to burn a Quran on September 11th when she writes: 

Recently, Muslims did not want a Florida pastor to burn the Quran even though the right exists to do that. And I agree. It should not be burned, but they should show us the same respect.

America not only is facing a physical war but a spiritual one, too. I won't forget a video I saw of some Muslims stomping on our flag and tearing it up. They yelled at their friends, "It's OK. We can do this. This is America." Sad. 

She was right to say that Jones did have the right to burn the Quran even though it was cited as a serious threat to national security, but is wrong to say that Muslims were the only ones who did not want him him to not do so. In fact, there were many Christians here and abroad crying out for him to not do so. But finally, it was the Pentagon who finally talked him down from burning the Muslim holy book. So, as to the issue of showing "us" the same respect, there is no "they." There were not any confines based on religion or nation in the group of people calling for the Quran not to be burned. 


It is far too often that we pursuit issues as "white vs. black" or "us vs. them," but there is no "us" there is no "them." I don't know the video to which she was referring to, but how do you identify someone as Muslim? I would suggest that these people may have just been upset with the war-driven foreign policies of the United States, and certainly not Christianity. For if it were an issue of religion, would they have not torn apart and stomped on a copy of The Bible? I'm not a god and America-hating individual, I do agree, both acts are disgusting and deplorable, but there is no "us" and there is no "them" for us to call upon to attribute blame or fault. 


But on a far more bigoted note she writes that if you "want to be an American" you must:


"Speak our language" - The U.S. has no official language...


"...respect our laws" - Sounds fair.


"...pay our taxes" - Is anyone else thinking of an ironic way to substantially boost our IRS revenue right about now?


and finally

"...love our country." 

And to leave it on more of an anti-immigrant sentiment, she offers an alternative...
"OR LEAVE." 

How Predictable: No New Content in latest Attack Ad

I feel my previous predictions were pretty accurate after uncovering the first AFF Sponsored Attack Ad.

Just the same lines spigotted off again, only in a different format, Herseth Sandlin happened to vote with Nancy Pelosi on lots of procedural votes... big deal.

The only props I give this ad is the unintentional pun at 0:22 when the narrator instructs the viewer to "take the right path."

My bets are that this will annoy the average KSFY, KELO, and KDLT viewer more than anything.

Going Bankrupt? : GOP Pledges to America in a Lumberyard

The GOP works there cinematographic magic today in a Lumberyard claiming to be failed by their nation. It's entertaining how some got the dress code and others didn't. Or was this just another ploy to make the Grand Old Party more relatable to the "folks?"

I'm going to have to go with the latter... 

Strangely though, as a member of our fine nation, I do not feel failed. In fact I feel like our government is doing more than ever to help individuals with the basic necessities that they would otherwise go without. 

Jon Stewart takes on The Factor

Jon Stewart dominates Bill O'Reilly.

I truly can't believe that Bill-O is this pig-headed... Actually I can, but seriously. Way to be a dick.  

I don't know who Bill-O keeps referring to when he's talking about the "folks." Actually, I have a strong intuitive guess that he is referring to uneducated America, to which the FOX News outfit targets and intentionally misinforms.

He attacks President Obama, simply because he doesn't carry on the legacy of "Bushisms" that made George W. Bush so relatable. Obama has not separated himself, he has been separated by people like Bill O'Reilly who simply assert that he has separated himself.

When you get to the 5:45 mark listen to what Stewart says, and the not-so-opportune moment that  O'Reilly chooses to take to make his sound byte about admiring the tea party.

Watch these and try not to laugh, for this is what Fox News has become. The assertions are outrageous and not based in any sort of fact.

New Noem Ad: Kristi doesn't plan on polling or caucusing while in Washington...

Can anyone stand this nonsense?

That question has been plaguing my mind ever since I saw the latest Kristi Noem Campaign ad.  







Let me break down the video for you...

"Here on the ranch in South Dakota we don't take a lot of poles (or polls [but really, why would there be any need for any sort of polls at the farm... is someone new running for 'farmhand' while Kristi's on the road? Really?])" - I would hope not, that would be stealing... And she need not worry, with the latest poll, everyone has already forgotten about the previous Rasmussen Polls (I think there were three), so it sounds truer than it really is. 

"Or hold many caucuses." - Now for that, I really just don't see any need for. 

"Do what needs to be done... That's what I'll do in Washington." - Oh, so she means like voting for a bill that's going to save hundreds of thousands of jobs or intervene to prevent healthcare and education costs from skyrocketing? 

"Unlike my opponent, I'll vote to lower the national debt, vote against wasteful spending." - Oh, so it's kind of like she will work towards fiscal discipline... just like the Blue Dog Democrats? Also, I thought she just said in her first statement that she wouldn't be holding any polls, or is she proposing introducing a bill that would cut entitlement spending (maybe by privatizing medicare and social security)? Because as anyone well read on the issue of national debt would know, the increases of spending we see year after year are coming mainly out of the entitlements... Or maybe she plans on cutting funding for our young men and women overseas, as our military also takes up a big piece of the budget pie. It's easy to say you are going to lower the national debt, but what does the Noem plan really look like? She says that it probably wouldn't look like The Ryan budget, so what does it look like? 

"Repeal government mandated healthcare." - So I guess I was wrong when I made my assumptions about her sticking true about what needed to be done. 

"And work every day to create jobs." - Sounds bold. Must be talking about a pretty advanced government plan to create more jobs. Wait, isn't that exactly what Kristi attacked Stephanie for at at the convention of the Associated School Boards of South Dakota and School Administrators of South Dakota? I wonder what Kristi's plan is to create jobs? If it's just the free market, I want her job. Though I don't think you could quite consider sitting back and doing nothing all day as "working all day". Hmm...

"And one more thing..." Wait for it... She just remembered something profound.

"My first vote won't be to make Nancy Pelosi Speaker" - Here she goes again, trying to posture the enemy as Pelosi. I guess if the first four times around fail, heck, what's a fifth going to hurt? 

"I'm Kristi Noem and I approve this message." - That makes one of us... Seriously, if you're going to try to make a statement at least have some content. 

"Sorry Nancy" - Boom-roasted. Noem's really pwnd some serious n00bage in this ad. ZOMG

This ad is nothing more than fluff and pandering to her base... I kind of wish that Herseth-Sandlin would do the same.
